Esztergom is one of the most important cities in Hungarian history. More than a thousand years ago, the Hungarian state began to take shape here, and today the city remains the spiritual center of Hungarian Catholicism.
Towering above the town is the magnificent Esztergom Basilica — the largest church in Hungary and one of the most impressive cathedrals in Central Europe. Its massive dome can be seen from miles away, and the terraces of the Castle Hill offer spectacular views over the Danube.
During our visit we will walk up to Castle Hill, where the best viewpoints of the city are located. From here you’ll enjoy beautiful panoramas of the Danube River, the elegant Maria Valeria Bridge, and the Slovak town of Štúrovo on the opposite bank.
We will step inside the Esztergom Basilica, explore its crypt, and visit the famous Cathedral Treasury, the richest church treasury in Hungary. Here you’ll find extraordinary religious treasures and works of art, some nearly 800 years old. Among the highlights are medieval crosses, baroque reliquaries, delicate Italian Renaissance embroidery, Greek icons, precious liturgical objects, and rare gifts from across Europe — including pieces connected to the Russian Empire.
After visiting the basilica, we will head to the Maria Valeria Bridge, which connects Hungary and Slovakia. If you wish, we can walk across the bridge and find ourselves in another country within minutes. From the Slovak side, you’ll get some of the most beautiful views of the basilica and the Danube — a perfect spot for photos. We can also take a short break here for coffee or a local beer.
