Eger — A Heroic Fortress, Baroque Streets, and the Famous “Bull’s Blood” Wine

Duration: 5–7 hours
Format: private tour with transfer from Budapest
Eger is one of the most beautiful historic towns in Hungary. Located about two hours from Budapest, it is known for its rich history, elegant baroque architecture, and famous red wines.
But above all, Eger is a city of heroes.

In 1552, a small Hungarian garrison achieved the seemingly impossible: they defended the city against a massive Ottoman army. Their victory became a powerful symbol of Hungarian courage and remains one of the most celebrated moments in the country’s history.

Today, the Eger Castle still rises above the town, offering breathtaking views of the old city, its baroque towers, and the rolling hills of northern Hungary.

During our walk through the historic center of Eger, we will see:

  • the Eger Basilica, one of the three largest basilicas in Hungary
  • the Archbishop’s Palace, a reminder of the city’s importance as a religious center
  • charming baroque squares and hidden courtyards of the old town
  • the Minorite Church on István Dobó Square, considered one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Hungary
  • the northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe, a rare survivor from the Turkish period of the 16th century
Just across from the basilica stands the former Episcopal Lyceum, built in the 18th century by Bishop Károly Eszterházy. Inside this elegant building hides one of the most beautiful baroque libraries in Hungary — the Eszterházy Library, with stunning frescoes, historic wooden bookcases, and a collection of rare books.
If the library is open on the day of our visit, we may step inside to admire this remarkable space.
We will then climb up to Eger Castle, where the famous siege of 1552 took place. From the castle walls you can enjoy some of the best panoramic views of the city.

If you wish, we can end the trip in the Valley of the Beautiful Women (Szépasszony-völgy) — one of Hungary’s most famous wine areas. Here dozens of small wine cellars offer tastings of the region’s wines, including the legendary Egri Bikavér, or “Bull’s Blood.”
